One of the disciplines of Christian discipleship is being in relationships to encourage spiritual growth in others. At First Methodist, there are many opportunities to be in Christian fellowship through participating in a small group study or being part of a ministry team. Opportunities specifically intended to encourage fellowship include the following:
Sunday Morning Fellowship: Provides a venue for fellowship with all people of FUMC. Coordinators oversee coffee and light refreshments (breakfast type) served Sunday mornings between early service and Sunday school (9:30-9:45). The Sunday school classes provide refreshments and assist.
Church Fellowship Food Service: In concert with special church events, the team provides a venue for fellowship by coordinating receptions, meals and refreshments. The team needs people to provide food, set up, clean up, decorate tables, and assist in serving.
Fun Bunch: An opportunity to enjoy fellowship in an informal setting. The "Fun Bunch" is comprised of groups of 10-12 individuals. Each group meets once a month for a social get together. Activities might include a meal in a member's home or at a restaurant, attending a function such as a play, or visiting other places of interest. New groups are formed every six months.
Methodist Connection: Provides a time and place for our Young at Heart to meet and have fun, fellowship, and great food. Methodist Connection meets every 2nd Tuesday (except June, July and August) in the Fellowship Hall for a covered dish lunch. On occasion, the group meets in a local restaurant, Dutch treat. Other opportunities include one day trips.
Mission Bridge: Play Bridge and raise money for missions the third Friday of each month, at the church. Participants take turns hosting. Light refreshments are served.
Sunday Lunch Bunch: An opportunity for Christian fellowship each Sunday. The fellowship group, a mix of singles and married couples, leaves after the 11:00 service for a restaurant. The quarterly calendar is available. Other social events and trips are enjoyed.
Men's Prayer Breakfast: Men join together for prayer, sharing prayer concerns, devotions, breakfast, and fellowship on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month, at 7:00 am at Hendrix Restaurant on West Innes Street.
United Methodist Women (UMW): "The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participants in the global ministries of the church." UMW, in circles (small groups), meet once a month, normally on the 1st Monday, except during the summer. Each circle plans programs about and participates in missions in the community and the world. Circles are available both during the day and in the evening, in the church and in homes.
Golf Team: Play weekly 9-hole matches against different churches at McCanless Golf Club, shotgun start at 5:30 pm on Tuesday afternoons, May-August.
