What We Believe

Our Faith & What Shapes Us

A United Methodist is someone who seeks to live out faith through love—by caring for others, serving the world, and growing in grace along the way. We believe God’s love is for everyone, and we are called to share that love through compassion, justice, and everyday acts of kindness.

At the heart of our faith is Jesus Christ, whom we understand as the fullest expression of God’s love. Through Jesus’ life, teachings, death, and resurrection, we see God’s deep care for the world and for each of us.

The Methodist movement began in 18th-century England with John Wesley, who emphasized a faith that is lived, not just believed. His focus on God’s grace, thoughtful reflection, personal experience, and practical action continues to shape United Methodist faith today.

Today, the United Methodist Church is a worldwide connection of more than 12 million people across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States—joined together by a shared commitment to faith, service, and grace-filled living.

Core Christian Beliefs We Affirm

Like many Christian churches, we affirm the beliefs expressed in the Apostles’ Creed, including:

  • One God, the Creator and sustainer of all that exists

  • The Trinity—one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

  • Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is both fully human and fully divine

These beliefs form the foundation of our faith and guide how we worship, serve, and live together as a community shaped by grace.

United Methodists are active in their communities and throughout the world in many ways, including:

  • Serving through local mission projects and community partnerships

  • Responding to global needs through the United Methodist Committee on Relief and other mission efforts

  • Working for justice and addressing issues such as poverty, hunger, and inequality

  • Supporting education, job training, and skill-building opportunities

  • Offering pastoral care through counseling, support groups, and compassionate presence

  • Partnering in community development programs that promote dignity and hope

What is a Lighthouse Congregation?
Lighthouse churches have affirmed their desire to remain United Methodist and are ready to welcome anyone whose church has closed or disaffiliated.

If you find yourself in these circumstances, we first want you to know that we see you. We love you. And we will help guide you. A Lighthouse Congregation is a United Methodist faith community that will serve as a resting place with people who will care for you while providing a haven of peace and grace. Whether you are an individual or a group of people who have become displaced or churchless because of closing or disaffiliation, Lighthouse Congregations will be there for you during this difficult time.
